Selling my 4870x2 (with XSPC waterblock fitted) and upgrading for BF3, to something like a gtx580 or a 6970.
The gtx 580 is around £350 and the 6970 is £237. I know the 580 is the better card but for over a £100 more is it worth it? :S

personally I would get a GTX 580, but then I don't know how they compare. Outcasst has probably got a chart :)
In BC2 at 1080p, the 580 has a 13FPS average lead on the 6970
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/gra...-6970-review/9
13fps is hardly worth £100 imo. I could close that gap by overclocking tbh. :)
Then theres the gtx 570 for the same price as a 6970?....hmmm decisions.
Been trying to find a secondhand 5970 but they are going for daft money on ebay (nearly as much as a new one in some cases....idiots) and a gtx580 secondhand....nothing at a reasonable price?
Yeah I'm looking at GTX 570's for a PC atm, probably going to get an Asus one. Haven't done much research on them (GTX 570) yet as I've had other things to do first.
Just bought 1 of these. http://www.gainward.com/main/edm/GTX...X580_GOOD.html
Cool, you joined the Green Team :)
What happened to £100 is not worth 13FPS? :D
I read some more benchmarks where the gap was a lot more than the article i had first read.....and tbh i am sick of ATI drivers giving me BSOD everytime i update them....i was on the same driver for nearly a year before i found a new one that worked properly and i am still on that one now (10.10), Never had any bother with my old Nvidia drivers and my sons has also been spot on.
Still hasn't arrived yet but i am also waiting for one of these http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/L-...G14_19186.html
To bridge the gap from my old graphics card. :D
just brought a 6970 so let you know how it performs tomorrow when it gets here :)
I went with the Asus ATI Radeon HD 6970 DirectCU II 2048MB and coupled it with a nice new OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive

Im most impressed with the SSD being my first SSD and from what i've been told i started with a good one. Its made a hell of a difference to every day computing.
The graphics card.... hmm what to say! Going from a 4870x2 - 6970 was always going to give me better performance. BC2 runs very well on maximum settings with HBAO enabled where my 4870X2 struggled slightly. although with HBAO i still get the odd GFX stutter during large explosions.
BC2 looks better, sharper and more dynamic but again i'm putting that down mostly to being able to enable the HBAO feature.
BTW the card is HUGE! takes up 3 slots and is an inch longer than the 4870X2 but nearly twice the thickness. but so much quiter and cooler than the 4870X2. infact 30 degrees cooler at stock with less fan speed. it also maintains its temps quite well at full load.
The card is worth every penny i spent. but depending on what your currently running dont expect a huge leap in FPS. just a smoother ride all round which im happy with. its overclocks well.
I nearly bought that very same card until i realised it would take up 3 slots and i would have to get rid of my soundcard (isnt gonna happen) read a few reviews and they had very good feedback.
Still havent got mine.....got my L-piece today..... hope i get my graphics card tomorrow....just got Crysis 2 to see what it plays like. :)
im having issues with mine already under performing. lost 6000 3dmark 06 points compaired to my 4870x2 :S
Oh dear...... that can't be right.
3d mark reporting false information. other test prove the cards working :) phew
Nice one.....bet that's a relief. :)
yup :up2:
well it went tits up with the Gainwood card so i have just ordered one of these.....
http://www.pureoverclock.com/review.php?id=1139&page=5
The reason i chose this card is that it is a reference model and i can water-cool it at a later date.
Never been a fan of them (gainward) a mate of mine had nothing but trouble with them through 3 or 4 generations of cards, why he kept buying them I will never know.
Obviously they don't learn very quickly do they !!
I thought you were getting a Pailit or PNY one to start with or I would have warned you :(
Still getting a PNY now so all sorted :)
Let us know how you find it, as I am tempted by their GTX 570.
This guy offered me a manufactured refurbished gainwood , it was a good price but the company he was dealing with messed him about so much that he first offered me a refund and then said if i seen a card on a certain big website, that he could get me a brand new one minus the VAT for the trouble it had been with the original card.....couldn't say no to saving £50 on a brand new one. :)
Got my pny card today and fitted it........any suggestions on setting it up....physix color vibrancy etc?
nice mate, how is it performing compared to the last one?
I haven't really fiddled with my 580 yet so i'm afraid i'm not much help.
I havent done any benching as yet.....i'm trying to get my hands on one of these http://eu.evga.com/products/moreInfo...ly=Accessories
Cant find a uk supplier?
Not feeling the blueish pcb board tbh, + it's a dust collector (i don't do dust) so with a backplate i will just wipe it with my little duster brush and jobs a goodun (sad i know, it's my ocd) :)
I have just seen them...... not sure if i like them....then theres do i get a black one or a silver one......silver might look cool if i shine a blue or orange light on it.....or black to blend in with the rest of the build????....Help. :)
I would go with black
ha ha....ive decided to go for the nickel plated one, but everyones sold out, loads of black ones, that makes me want a silver one even more now. :)
The one on amazon is from specialtech who are sold out but haven't said this on amazon???
LOL typical, http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/
I didn't think you could use EK backplates without the block? Said so in the manual that came with mine anyway.
Ah.....just ordered one as well....................i don't see why not, you can see the screw holes that attach to the pcb?
It's just cosmetic and to stop dust gathering on pcb board.
The screws don't attach to the PCB, they attach to the mounting holes on the waterblock
Right i know they attach to the waterblock , but that is because the original cooler is missing and at the corners where there is no waterblock you have to use nuts and bolts to secure it as the cooler is now missing and there is nothing to attach it too.....but my cooler wont be missing?
So then i just use the original bolts/screws and attach to cooler. .....simples. :)

Or failing that i have some blue tac somewhere. :)
Well if it works let me know because I'd like one for my 2nd 580
Ek have gave me a refund ha ha.....so i replied with....so do i need a waterblock or can i just fit it to the existing screw points etc etc......no reply as yet.....just been looking at another evga backplate youtube vid and tbh the only thing that i can see that would stop you would be that the screws could be too short......but you get screws with the backplate, but are they too long because they go into the waterblock?
I'm gonna wait for a reply from EK and some other forums i have posted this dilemma on and if nobody comes up with a definite answer i think i will just order one anyway, i mean did you see that nickel plated one in the vid.....it was pure sex.
Got a reply from EK and as i thought they reckon it is just down to the screw size.
this is the reply.....
Hi!
You need to have right screws that goes through the backplate into the block, and this is what I don’t know what they have.
Best regards, Eddy
I replied and asked if there was anyone who would know if i could do this.
