I didn't think you could use EK backplates without the block? Said so in the manual that came with mine anyway.

Ah.....just ordered one as well....................i don't see why not, you can see the screw holes that attach to the pcb?
It's just cosmetic and to stop dust gathering on pcb board.
The screws don't attach to the PCB, they attach to the mounting holes on the waterblock
Right i know they attach to the waterblock , but that is because the original cooler is missing and at the corners where there is no waterblock you have to use nuts and bolts to secure it as the cooler is now missing and there is nothing to attach it too.....but my cooler wont be missing?
So then i just use the original bolts/screws and attach to cooler. .....simples. :)

Or failing that i have some blue tac somewhere. :)
Well if it works let me know because I'd like one for my 2nd 580
Ek have gave me a refund ha ha.....so i replied with....so do i need a waterblock or can i just fit it to the existing screw points etc etc......no reply as yet.....just been looking at another evga backplate youtube vid and tbh the only thing that i can see that would stop you would be that the screws could be too short......but you get screws with the backplate, but are they too long because they go into the waterblock?
I'm gonna wait for a reply from EK and some other forums i have posted this dilemma on and if nobody comes up with a definite answer i think i will just order one anyway, i mean did you see that nickel plated one in the vid.....it was pure sex.
Got a reply from EK and as i thought they reckon it is just down to the screw size.
this is the reply.....
Hi!
You need to have right screws that goes through the backplate into the block, and this is what I don’t know what they have.
Best regards, Eddy
I replied and asked if there was anyone who would know if i could do this.
Just had another reply and he thinks i want to fit it to a different type of block, trying to explain i want it to go onto existing cooler.
I will get one then Lloyd as i can get different lengths of screws from my pals work.
If it doesn't fit properly and your gonna buy it from me then i haven't got anything to lose apart from your gtx 580 looking the dogs and mine looking shite. :)
I will just see what he says now as hes emailing me at the moment.
Re-ordered....will let you know what it is like when i get it.....there will be pics, polishing, stroking, and salivating.
I will also do the same when i get the backplate. :)
Just received this email from EK tech dept.....
Hi Mark,
In order to use the EK-FC580 backplate you will need to tap six mounting holes in your stock cooler to M3 thread and then use the appropriate countersunk screws (I believe the M3x8 DIN7991 or M3x8 DIN965) should fit perfectly. Of course this will void the warranty on your graphics card.
Alternatively you could use M2.5x8 countersunk if you find them at your local hardware store. This way you will not void the warranty.
Best Regards, Niko
sounds like a lot of work...
I like a challenge.....and i will probs be the first person to ever do this mod. And of course it will look the dogs danglys when finished.
It won't be as bad as when i fitted a Mitsubishi sport rear boot spoiler to my Nissan pathfinder.....i had an idea and went for it.....now that was hard work.
First person to do this. :)
