Default ATi 4850/4870 Thread

Ok i made the switch from Nvidia to ATi for the first time in a very long time

having owned a 8800GTX, 8800 Ultra and a 9800GTX i have made the move to a HD4870 and so far i am very impressed by ATi's latest creation it running far better that the 9800GTX i had before and i had that clocked at 843 core.

only thing i will say is that the 4870 does run hot but that wont really be aproblem once i bung a waterblock on it.

Reason i switched is really down to a performance/cost ratio that the 280GTX
way overpriced for what it can do.

Yeah me too, i bought a DD block for my 8800GTX and really didn't like the finish, plus it was twice the price. It never made it out of the box.

just for those remaining on air, there's a file modification to do to get the fan run properly on HD4800 series, difference is amazing- new drivers might have fixed this ...- but in the meantime:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/...hlight=ATI+fan

1. In Catalyst Control Centre, make sure clock and memory settings are correct and turn on Overdrive
2. Create a Catalyst Control Centre profile called "fanspeed"
3. Navigate to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\ and you'll find an XML file titled "fanspeed", open the file in Notepad or your preferred editor. The file should resemble the following:

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

4. As shown above, change the "FanSpeedAlgorithm" value to Manual and the "FanSpeedPercentTarget" value to 65 (or your preferred fan speed in percentage)
5. Save the file and reload the "fanspeed" profile in Catalyst Control Centre.

Never had a ati card before...always been a nvidia die hard tbh...just ordered a powercolor 4870 1gb from scan...theyre out of stock ,so its on pre order.
Ebuyer just slapped £20 increase on the same card for some reason?
