i want to upgrade my RAM as 4GB does not cut the mustard any more.

I don't have a budget but was thinking 12GB Tri Channel DDR3 or even 24GB

Would 24GB be over kill for gaming? bearing in mind i dont want to have to buy more ram for a few years!
